BUNT x Maia del Estal - An Interview with Creative Director Amelie Trimpl
The music changes, the lights flicker, and in walks Maia del Estal. Two models are standing in the middle of the room, looking at the crowd.
Maia del Estal begins painting the canvases that the models are wearing, filling the room with a presence that makes everyone hold their breath. Almost in a trance, she transforms the canvases, designed by Ciara Fitzgerald, into masterpieces. During the performance, the models tell a story of longing, of the search for a soulmate. They reach toward each other, trying to connect, but fail to do so—until the paintings are complete and they are meant to meet at the right moment. They join hands, the lights go off, and the crowd screams. This performance took place at Please Space Studios in Brooklyn, NY, conceived by German Creative Director Amelie Trimpl as the official launch of BUNT AGENCY, a New York City–based creative agency. The pieces are currently up for auction, with 50% of the proceeds from each piece going directly to Trans Lifeline, an organization that provides emotional and financial support to trans people in need. Receipts will be shared with buyers after purchase. The remaining 50% will go to the artist and designer.

Your direction for the BUNT launch created an experience that felt both intimate and radical. What core feeling or idea did you want each guest to walk away with that night?

There wasn’t one specific feeling I wanted the audience to experience, but rather an understanding that design can be intentional, and that fashion is political. Guests approached me asking if what they felt was intentional, and whether the story behind the performance aligned with their interpretations. I could tell you exactly what I hoped to awaken in people and the story I built the performance around. But in the end, it’s about what emotions the performance stirs in you, emotions tied to the themes of love, pain, queerness, and partnership.

BUNT seamlessly blends fashion, performance, and social impact. How did you approach balancing these elements in the creative direction without losing emotional authenticity?

The goal for the launch was to build a performance around the agency’s core values. Bunt is a German word that means “colorful” which we see metaphorically.

Queerness and partnership were the overarching themes of the performance, showcasing queer love with intention. I believe that building around values and representation makes it easier to stay emotionally authentic.

You describe your work as being rooted in modern minimalism and bold visual storytelling. How did that aesthetic translate into the raw, expressive chaos of live garment painting?

The goal was to blend fashion with art. Fashion is both political and intentional, and so is art. Combining these two mediums results in pieces that carry immense power.

Minimalism doesn’t have to be boring or shallow; it can be a way to focus attention on the core elements of a performance. By staying within a consistent color palette, both in the paint and the lighting, and by holding the performance at Please Space Studio, a venue that’s already inherently minimal, we created an environment that allowed the audience to fully focus on the story being told.

What was the collaborative process like between you, Maia Del Estal, and Ciara Fitzgerald? How did you ensure each artist’s vision remained distinct yet cohesive within the performance?

Working closely with both artists and going over the story multiple times during pre-production created a shared vision of what the performance would look like.

It was also important for me to clearly communicate the story I wanted to tell and the feelings I hoped to awaken in the audience. Once that foundation was set, I gave them the freedom to interpret those emotions through their own artistic lens. The same goes for the models, Emma and Ciara did an amazing job of taking the themes and story and building their characters around them.

BUNT is described as a project of passion and love—for the industry and society. Can you share a personal moment from the night that crystallized that purpose for you?

When the hands of the models joined, with looks of love and longing after slowly moving toward each other, I got chills. I think we’ve all longed for someone we haven’t met yet, and there’s comfort in believing that the red string theory truly exists.

Especially for queer people, that first love can feel so rare and precious that it seems like it’s the only one they’ll ever have. But knowing there’s someone out there, someone you’re simply not ready to meet yet because you’re still becoming the version of yourself meant to meet them, is powerful and reassuring.

Looking ahead, how do you envision BUNT evolving as a platform? Will it continue to fuse creative disciplines and social advocacy, or shift in new directions?

We are a creative agency focused on projects in the fashion industry. BUNT will always be a safe space while creating with love, for both the industry and its people.

We’re excited to continue pushing boundaries and challenging the comfort zones of the industry while working on projects that reflect brands’ values and demonstrate that fashion is both intentional and a powerful expression of the world we live in.
