SurreaLOVE

Follow these two artists through their extensive residency. In a joint foray through their luminescent property, they encounter memories and already produced objects. Inspiration is waiting at every hidden corner. Their work, which runs through the entire story, tells of commonalities, the past, the experienced. This special kind of togetherness is also reflected in the intimate bond between these two. Current fashion like Loewe, Jil Sander and Acne Studios reflects their one of a kind creativity.

Interview with photographer Nadine Dinter

Interview with photographer Nadine Dinter
For the people who don’t yet know you: who are you, and what do you do?
My name is Nadine Dinter. I work as a professional publicist in the fields of art & culture, specializing in the promotion of photography (exhibitions, books, and artists in general). Apart from this main occupation, I am a writer, curator, and photographer. It’s all about photography – that is what brings it all together.
What work do you most enjoy doing?
Working on the creative side – writing, taking photos, and curating. That creates a sweet flow, a different way of thinking and the possibility to activate another part of the brain, compared to organizing, structuring, and strategically planning other people’s projects and creative output, such as photographs or books. I very much enjoy both sides, as they beautifully complement each other.
What type of art do you most identify with?
Definitely photography, but I also love painting, sculpture, and installation art.

How did you come up with the idea for the exhibition?
In 2012, I curated a photo show for the New York artist duo The Hilton Brothers. One of them was Christopher Makos, a longtime friend of Andy Warhol who documented his life in photographs. Of course, during our work together and in most of his interviews, he spoke about Andy Warhol. Part of his travel crew was the former erotic art model Benjamin Godfre, with whom I clicked pretty quickly, chatting about LA, photography, and Warhol. We especially loved Warhol’s series Torsos and decided to take some pictures together. The rest is history.

What theme do you pursue in this exhibition?
In my show Torso Reloaded, I explore male nudes and how the current generation stages and adorns itself.Over the course of four months (January to April 2022), I photographed six young men, asking them to take poses that seemed typical for their personality and profession. They include a slick skater, a professional model,a wrestler, a photographer, and a fitness trainer. The images I took of Godfre from 2012 are also included in the show.

What is your favorite piece of artwork in the exhibition, and why?
That’s impossible for me to say – I love them all – and each one is special in its own way.

How could you tell when this series was finished?
It was finished this spring, in April 2022.

Do you have a funny or interesting story from your work on this project?
One of the 2022 models has the logo of my all-time favorite band HIM, tattooed above his crotch – it was a nice coincidence, as I discovered that only after we started to shoot. You can see some of those images in the show, too.

Where can I go to see more of your work?
Most works, also from other series plus all my travel impressions, can be found on my IG account @dinterphotography. I also recently created a little website with more information about myself, my photography background, and the different series. Feel free to visit www.dinterphotography.de

Exhibition „TORSO RELOADED“ by NADINE DINTER, 1.10 – 29.10.2022 at HAZEGALLERY

Exhibition "TORSO RELOADED" by NADINE DINTER, 1.10 - 29.10.2022 at HAZEGALLERY

The solo exhibition Torso Reloaded by Nadine Dinter opens at HAZEGALLERY in Berlin on 1 October 2022. Dinter developed the concept in 2012 while working with New York photographer Christopher Makos, a long-time companion of Andy Warhol. For his exhibition Andy Dandy and Other Works, which Nadine Dinter curated at galerie hiltawsky, Makos traveled with, among others, former erotic art model and current tattoo artist Benjamin Godfre, who turned out to be a passionate Warhol fan. Dinter and Godfre spontaneously de-cided to photographically recreate Warhol’s legendary Torso series from 1977.

Exactly ten years later, the photographer has taken up the idea once again. While Warhol’s spirit continues to be the inspiration, Dinter’s latest project shines the spotlight on the different body types of the current generation of men.
Alongside the first torso she photographed, of Benjamin Godfre, her images portray six representative men – from the professional model Benjamin Kühnemund and the photographer Traegi to a wrestler, a fitness in-structor, a computer scientist, and fellow photographer Alexander Schuktuew. While Warhol mainly photo-graphed the front and back of male models in a tight close-up shot, Nadine Dinter’s wider framing gives them more space, adding impact to individual characteristics such as tattoos, scars, and musculature. As a result, the bodies seem close enough to touch without being overtly sexualized. These contemplative body shots were taken in an intimate hotel atmosphere using only natural lighting between January and April 2022. Each picture tells its own story, transforming the bare image into a unique photographic profile.

The exhibition Torso Reloaded also addresses the female gaze on the male body, while documenting the photographer’s exploration of the body cult in contemporary society. All of the images from 2022 were tak-en with a Leica SL2.

About the photographer: Nadine Dinter started working as a photographer in 1991, initially focusing on im-ages of sculptures and portraiture. Her first exhibition was in 1998 at Schering AG. Further presentations of her photographic works in Berlin and New York followed: Project Angel + Project Angel Reloaded (2001, NYC), Essence of Winter (2002, NYC), In the Eye of the Beholder (2004, Berlin), and Janus-Faced (2013, Ber-lin). From 2006 she worked as a freelance photographer for various publications. She has been represented by akg-images since 2000. More information: @dinterphotography

About the gallery: HAZEGALLERY was founded in 2019 with the mission of sharing Berlin’s young contempo-rary art scene with the world through exhibitions, pop-up shows, and art gatherings. More information: www.haze.gallery

3D online exhibition „POLE“ by ANNA SAMOYLOVA

3D online exhibition "POLE" by ANNA SAMOYLOVA

Everyone’s life has changed in the past six months. The news agenda leaves us numb and it is impossible to remain indifferent to what is happening in the world. It is especially difficult when you realise that you cannot directly influence the injustice taking place.

The project POLE is a visual diary that artist Anna Samoylova has been keeping since February 24th. The works in this series convey the artist’s inner feelings and her attitude toward the aggressive confrontation that is happening right now before our eyes and without our consent.  The linocuts are not literal illustrations, but rather allegorical images that arise as flashes in the artist’s memory, under the influence of strong feelings and experiences: emptiness and a familiar landscape, the words of a popular song, a reminder of real-life events – they are like puzzles, put together in a single, elusive image, like the landscape that we see from the window of a rushing train. All the works are made in the same size, in the format of a rectangle, which visually resembles a window leading into another surreal reality, the world of our memories and images. In her work, Anna asks the difficult questions inherent in our time: how to continue to love a country where your voice is worthless? What to do about the oppressive sense of guilt that settles inside many today?

The linocuts in the POLE series include hand embroidery, pearl trim, and prints on grass-dyed fabric in an already signature shade of red for the artist. The choice of this color was once inspired by traditional techniques, but now, in the context of the exhibition, red also becomes a symbol of inner anxiety, a permanent premonition of trouble that envelops us like a sticky fog.

There are no people here, only symbols, objects, and words. This selection of images is chosen intentionally, to give the viewer an outsider’s view of the artist’s feelings, abstracted from the physiological and corporeal.

ANNA SAMOYLOVA

Anna Samoylova (b. 1995) lives and works in Moscow. In search of national identity, the artist explores the culture of the Russian countryside, everyday life, customs, and costumes, interpreting them in her works. Anna Samoylova’s graphic red subjects tell universal stories of women growing up, becoming, and resisting, where modernity and the past, truth, and fiction can mix. Anna treats circulation works as reverently as she does large canvases: she dyes the fabric on which the drawings are made by hand, printing on it and embroidering it.

Shot on film documentary style, our story follows Lera and Liana as they travel around various brutalist, constructivist, and Stalinist architectural locations including the Tass building, Moscow metro, the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment, and dom na nozhkah( house with the legs).

Dressed in an array of provocative emerging and established Russian and Ukrainian designers, the aesthetic has a deeper meaning than what meets the eye as the general attitudes towards sexuality, gender, and self-expression are much more fluid and evolved than what the west perceives.
These girls are assertive yet feminine they use fashion as a space to play with gender, power, and the notions of public and private.
